Pain Killers and Poetry

I tried to write, but fear interrupted
A woman stared at me from beneath the chest of drawers,
Wild hair, sunken eyes, lipless teeth grinning a skeleton smile
She waits for me to drift off

The opioid-induced stupor is taking hold quickly
Take these, the doctor said
Don’t let the pain get ahead of you…
